On December 15, 2023, Don Bosco High School and Jr. College, Naigaon conducted their much-anticipated Sports Day, which was a lively celebration of athleticism and teamwork. Fr. Diego Nunes and Fr. Francis Fernandes were the honoured guests of the day.
The sports day featured a variety of disciplines, including track and field events and team sports. At two distinct sessions, the various school sections planned their event with their unique themes. ‘Let your light shine’ was the theme for the Secondary Section, while ‘Care for Creation’ was the theme for the Primary and College Section.
At each session the sports day began with a thrilling opening ceremony that featured a dynamic display of music and dance for spectators and participants alike.
The torch, a symbol of hope, peace and unity was then lit and ceremonially carried at the opening. The Chief Guest then declared the sports meet open.
The Secondary Section’s float, which underlined the day’s theme and sent a message of love, peace, hope, and joy for everyone, ushered in and encapsulated the spirit of Christmas. The house parades were spectacular, wherein several groups marched with pride brandishing their vibrant props and uniforms. The well-coordinated drill highlighting the theme, ‘Let your light shine’, the lively lezium and the exquisitely displayed pyramids were all a sight to behold.
Every house of the Primary and College Section creatively displayed their dedication to environmental consciousness and sustainability during a vibrant march past parade that followed a magnificent dance performance, which highlighted the theme of preserving the Earth’s natural beauty. The crowd was captivated by dance, drill, karate, and gymnastics demonstrations which highlighted athleticism, talents and discipline.
The large school ground, garlanded with colourful banners and flags, was alive with activity and there was a palpable enthusiasm among the competitors as they got ready for a rigorous day of competition. The air was filled with excitement as athletes prepared to demonstrate their skills and compete for glory. The track and field events, and team events enthralled the audience when participants exhibited their strength, speed and agility.
Athletes pushed themselves to the edge to reach the finish line in the fastest time possible in the dramatic 100-meter sprint and other races. Several athletes under the various age levels, stood out for their exceptional performances and were awarded the championship trophy.
The speeches by the Rector, Fr. Dominic Martis, the Principal, Fr. Anthony Fonseca and the Chief Guests all struck a powerful chord, highlighting the significance of environmental responsibility and sportsmanship.
“It feels so good to see my hard work pay off-I’ve been training for this event for months, ” said championship winner, Joshua Okh from grade eight.
The Chief Guest, Fr. Diego Nunes, encouraged the participants saying, “Do not let the negativity of others affect you. Try your hardest, give in your best and follow your happiness. That is all that is important.”
Exciting performances, notable accomplishments, and contagious excitement filled the day. The event had a tremendous impact on both players and spectators, and it served as a continual reminder of how athletics can bring people together, foster a sense of camaraderie, and honour greatness. The sports day was a truly remarkable event that exemplified the unwavering human spirit.
