Students from all sections of Don Bosco High School and Jr. College, Naigaon celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, with tremendous enthusiasm on November 4, 2023.
The day started off with a flurry of events and competitions, including the customary “Rangoli” sketching and colouring contest as well as contests for decorating earthen lamps and applying mehndi. The pupils used their fingertips to create and colour complex Rangoli designs. This artwork is said to be a lucky charm that will protect against all misfortune. They also created beautiful paintings and sketches on the diyas to demonstrate their skill. The mehndi designs made by the students of the college section featured floral motifs, religious symbols, and other elements that gave each design a special attractiveness.
The school hall exuded warmth and joy thanks to its colorful décor, theme and lights.
“Let your light shine” was the celebration’s theme for the day. The children performed a lovely welcome dance to open off the cultural programme, which was then followed by the customary lamp-lighting ceremony. A somber prayer ceremony praising God for his help and direction and seeking His blessings preceded the celebration. With a skit and a spectacular prayer dance performance, the children enthralled the audience and gave a lot of energy to the celebration. During their prayer session, the Primary Section students emphasized the importance of having a pollution-free, green, and clean Diwali. Along with their class teacher, the students held a pound party in their own class to encourage charity and giving. The school distributed boxes of traditional Indian sweets to each student.
Using the Diwali theme, the Rector, Rev. Fr. Dominic Martis, addressed the staff and students, emphasizing the need for us to use our inner light to dispel darkness and promote kindness, love, and generosity.
Students of Grade X performed in a special band concert and showcased some upbeat songs in a melodic instrumental presentation.
In his speech, Rev. Fr. Joaquim Fernandes, the Vice Principal, shared an anecdote with the students to enlighten them about the inner light that lies within each of us. He concluded the story saying, “Diamonds last a lifetime, but what about the diamonds that are inside each of us? Everybody needs to find their inner diamonds and let them shine!” He also urged the pupils to celebrate Diwali in an environmentally sustainable manner and to preserve the environment.
The students took part in the celebration with tremendous excitement and wholeheartedness. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by their dazzling faces and vibrant attire. All in all, it was a happy experience.
A vote of gratitude marked the end of the festivities.
